What is Perl?

Server-side scripting	Like PHP and ASP, Perl is a server-side scripting language, contained on the computers that host a website. Therefore it has access to the server in ways client-side scripts do not.
Interact with databases	Perl has the same capabilities as PHP and ASP to interact with databases, manipulate and extract their information.
Text manipulation	Many programmers enjoy Perl's pattern-matching abilities and the way it can search files and easily manipulate their text. System administrators (the guys who sit at computers all day and make sure everything is peachy) can use it at the command line (which is a completely text-based way to work with your computer) to replace text in several files at once, or to accomplish several other tasks.
