Virus Plays On London Attack Emotions
July 12th, 2005, 10:13am CDT AWS RSS Feed View This Article In PDF Format.

The recent coordinated bomb attack on three of the London's Underground trains and a double-decker bus, have left an impact that can be seen world wide. Not to be left out, would-be email attackers are now using some heavy social engineering to spread their viruses.

Several security companies around the internet are reporting a Trojan laden email designed to appear as a CNN newsletter containing video footage of disaster. The email appears to be from the address breakingnews@cnnonline.com with the subject "TERROR HITS LONDON" and a file that appears to be a video named "London Terror Moovie.avi". The movie actually contains a Trojan. If opened, the virus attachment turns infected Windows computer into spam zombies (computers that send bulk email to unsolicited email address). The Trojan also checks the victims computer for available SMTP (Email) servers and attempts to send bulk spam email through these servers as well.

There is not yet a name for this Trojan virus but it does show how low virus, malware, and adware writers are willing to sink to spread their internet junk.

Linux and Macintosh users are, like usual, unaffected. To protect yourself ensure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to date and you do not open any emails with unknown soruces regarding the London attacks.
